It’s that Valentine time again. 💝
Whether you’re into the whole red roses and hearts thing or not, there’s no doubt love is a big deal.
Our stories about love are huge in our lives.
Making The Lovers card one of the biggest Tarot rock stars there is.
EVERYBODY LOVES – THE LOVERS
Of course there’s a back story to Valentines day.
And yes, it’s a tragic story of love.
The date itself, the 14th February, was part of the ancient Roman Lupercalia festival of fertility.
On the 13th, 14th and 15th of February the priests of the day would sacrifice goats and dogs.
Then women were beaten with the skins of the poor animals to ensure they were fertile.
Not a great start, I think we can all agree.
(Flynn is certainly not impressed).
The bad guy of the story is Emperor Claudius, (who was also co-incidentally the emperor who began the Roman conquest of Britain).
He banned roman soldiers from marrying – boo!
He believed they fought better if they were single.
Happy soldiers are bad soldiers afterall.
Enter Bishop Valentine of Terni, who ignored the ban by performing marriages for Christian soldiers in secret – Yay!
For which he was ultimately executed on – yes February 14th – Boo
Before that though, he is said to have converted his jailer to Christianity by restoring the sight of his blind daughter, falling in love with her in the process.
Before his execution the 14th, he wrote a letter to her confessing his love and saying goodbye, signed “From your Valentine”. ❤️🩹
Alongside that there is also a French/Norman version called Galatin’s Day, which translates simply to “lover of women”.
Somewhat less tragic and very French.
So Valentines day it is, Saint Valentine is now the patron saint of Lovers everywhere (and beekeepers and people with epilepsy). 🐝
