My dad is 93, and this week he announced that he wants a pond in the garden.

Not goldfish. He was very clear about that.

Frogs and newts.

‘Your mum would never let me,’ he said, looking like a sad five year old who didn’t get the ice cream at the party.

Now, my dad almost never goes outside.

We encourage him, of course.

I have spent hours bringing the garden back to life, we open the back door and point at the sunshine, or suggests a little walk to the end of the garden and back.

He stays in the chair.

So I said as much, and he had his answer ready.

‘If I had a pond, I’d go outside. So you should make me one.’

And for about a minute, that sounded like the answer.

We’ll dig the pond. He’s 93 and he wants newts, so he’s getting newts.

But sitting there afterwards, I kept hearing one word.

If.

Because I know exactly how this goes. The pond gets dug, maybe the frogs move in, and Dad looks out through the window with a cup of tea.

Everything goes back to how it was, except now there’s a pond.

The pond was never going to get him out of the chair. The pond was his excuse not to.

The Four of Cups in Tarot is exactly this.

In my deck the guy on the card is sat on the floor with his arms folded on his knees and his head down.

From the side, a hand is offering him a cup, practically glowing. He isn’t looking at it. He’s busy with what’s is stopping him from taking the action he thought he most wanted.

The question is – what’s your pond?

When work calms down a bit, or there’s a bit more money. Once the kids are settled. When I have the time to spare.

We tell ourselves it’s a plan.

We tell ourselves we’re being sensible.

And the years go by (they really do go by) because the pond was never the point.

It was the permission slip we wrote ourselves for staying in the chair.

Here’s something to think about.

‘If I had X, I’d do Y’

Because as long as we haven’t got X, we never have to find out whether we’d actually do Y.

So here’s the better question. What am I waiting to be allowed to do?

If you’ve caught yourself saying ‘once I’ve got…’ for longer than you’d like to admit – maybe I can help.

The Knight of Pentacles is one of the little cards that no-one talks about. Not glamorous, and not exciting maybe, but don’t let that fool you. This little card is actually a little powerhouse of energy. Why not join me as I unpack just why that Knight of Pentacles energy is the secret source to being successful.
