Did you know the traditional May Day celebration is based on a love story?
Why is the Ace of Wands in Tarot like the Maypole?
In a way, they are both the same thing – they don’t look so different, eh?
Both represent fire energy, desire, new inspiration, sexuality and transformation – cool, eh?
But back to the story……… The legend goes, when the Horned God (the Winter aspect of the Green Man) sees the May Queen in her Maiden form, he realises that to be with the woman he loves he will need to undergo a huge change.
As they progress together around the hill, he prepares to surrender his life to her.
She then gives him life energy and brings him back in his new form, as the Green Man, so they can be together.
The marriage between the Green Man (representing the Sun) and the May Queen (representing the awakening Earth) was then celebrated.
The tradition of crowning the May Queen on the 1st of May and dancing around the Maypole was in fact a Celtic fertility celebration and part of the fire festival called Beltane that marked the beginning of summer.
It was said that the night before the celebration, that couples would disappear into the woods to reenact the May Queen /Green Man legend. When they returned for the Maypole dance, they often came staggering in from the fields, clothes in disarray, and straw in their hair after a night of … well, I’ll leave that to your imagination.
Isn’t that a lovely story?
Fun fact….
The Puritans banned the maypole celebration because…well, it was a symbolic ‘pole’ and just too much fun was being had!
The maypole was one of the first customs to be reinstated by Charles II 1660 though. Charles earned the title of the “Merry Monarch” through his love of entertainment and the liveliness of his court.
